Gate of the Column refers to a column, topped by a statue of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, that stood inside the gate beginning in the 2nd century AD. The additional caption refers to a characteristic group of bedouins outside a cafe on the left, a party of Turkish soldiers breakfasting, and a group of fruit and vegetable dealers on the right. This intersection is just inside the Damascus Gate. The Street of the Damascus Gate is the street at the right. It leads to the Suq Khan es-Zeit. The street at the left is El Wad Road. It leads to Temple Mount and the Western Wall. The location of the artist is approximately where the column topped by a statue of Hadrian stood in the 2nd century AD. This view is similar to today's view from the roof of the Petra Hotel, which is a short distance inside the Jaffa Gate, on the left side of David Street, the narrow street shown in the lower left of the drawing. The view is across the rooftops of the Old City. The Armenian Quarter is to the immediate right. The Jewish Quarter is in the upper right; the large domed building is the Hurva Synagogue.
